The invited talk was conducted at the Bearys Enviro Architecture Design School (BEADS) and Bearys Institute of Technology (BIT) on Sunday, 19 August 2018, with a main aim of motivating the students by providing an insight and proper guidance regarding the green infrastructure. The program commenced with invocation of Almighty and the welcome address by principal BEADS, Prof. Ashok LP Mendonca. The presidential address was delivered by Chairman of Bearys Group, Mr. Syed Mohammad Beary, in his address he said “Architects should not limit themselves to building only a green building but focus on developing a whole green infrastructure in the city” and also said that the Bearys group will be joining hands with Dr. Ken Yeang of Malaysia in a prestigious project at Chennai “Being the pioneers in green building and the only developer to have 6 platinum certifications from IGBC, Bearys Group is proud to be associated with Dr Ken” Beary added.
The resource person was world renowned architect, planner and author Dr. Ken Yeang of Malaysia. Dr Ken, who is recognized as the first ecologist architect globally, gives lectures extensively at conferences and schools of architecture (over 30 countries worldwide). The Guardian newspaper (2008) named him “one of the 50 people who could save the planet”.
Dr Ken gave a talk on ‘Sustainability and building in harmony with the natural world” and explained in detail, how he has worked on some of his most important projects across the world. He stressed the need to understand the importance of ecological architecture and master planning and creating hybrid systems as ‘constructed ecosystems’.
The interactive session was with Architecture and Civil Engineering Staff and Students regarding having green infrastructure in the city. While answering for one of the question he reminded the young architects that they should have the passion, ability to handle stress and work very hard to give best results. They should not enter to this field if intention is to make money. When asked about the economic feasibility of sustainable construction, Dr Ken said it will cost 6.3% more than the normal industry standards. But the amount of energy and water saved in these sustainable buildings will return that extra cost within 8 years. Architects, developers and the society should understand this, he said. The students were highly motivated by his inspirational talk and felt themselves with vast potential. He then moved on to share the experiences he faced in his field. The session went much more interesting with the real time examples and case studies. The program was highly beneficial for the students, who have joined from Srinivas School of Architecture and MIT Manipal. The Chairman of Bearys Group, presented a memento as the token of respect and appreciation to Dr. Ken Yeang. Arts Faculty member Laxminarayan presented Dr Ken’s portrait which he has drawn to him.
